Former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is aiming to delight the club’s fans by helping his current side Barcelona to Champions League glory against Manchester United tomorrow evening.
Mascherano moved to the Camp Nou from Liverpool last summer, switching from Anfield because his wife had reportedly grown unhappy with life in England.
Asked whether, being a former Liverpool player, stopping Manchester United winning the Champions League would be sweet, he replied: ” Yes, it will be, for my past.”
“Obviously it’s a bit different for me [than other Barcelona players] because I know the feeling of Liverpool supporters at this moment. But for now I play for Barca and want to win for me and this club.”
Mascherano still has an uneasy relationship with some sections of Liverpool’s support who remain unhappy with the way the Argentine angled for a move away from Anfield. The midfielder did reject a January approach from Chelsea however, reinforcing his position that he only wanted to leave England for his family’s happiness.
Helping Barcelona to victory against Manchester United will surely only help to boost the fondness with which is is remembered by some Reds fans.
