Veteran midfielder Paul Scholes has announced his retirement from football with immediate effect.
Speculation around the Manchester United man’s future had increased over the last few months, with suggestions he would soon follow fellow academy product and close friend Gary Neville in hanging up his boots.
Scholes will remain at the club however, taking a position on the coaching staff.
"This was not a decision I have taken lightly, but I feel now is the right time for me to stop playing", said Scholes.
"I am not a man of many words but I can honestly say playing football is all I’ve ever wanted to do and to have such a long and successful career at Manchester United has been a real honour.
"To have been part of the team that helped the club reach that 19th title has been a real privilege."
