Roma are stepping up their efforts to sign Arsenal full back Gael Clichy and could offer French playmaker Jeremy Menez to Arsene Wenger’s side to make the deal happen.

Menez is expected to leave the Giallorossi this summer and has been linked with AC Milan, Juventus, Napoli and Marseille. However, according to RMC, Roma may opt to use the 24-year-old as bait to snare countryman Clichy from Arsenal.

The capital city club, backed by the millions of new owner Thomas DiBenedetto, who is desperate for the side to qualify for the Champions League next season, have long been admirers of Clichy and have sounded out the Gunners over the defender’s availability.

Offering playmaker Menez to Arsenal may, the Giallorossi believe, tip the balance in their favour and smooth Clichy’s move to Rome.

The French international is undoubtedly talented and has four senior caps to his name, and despite initially impressing with Roma has seen his career stall.

Menez was unhappy at a lack of playing time under caretaker boss Vincenzo Montella last season, while the club’s fans criticised the Frenchman for a perceived lack of effort, even going so far as to attack the player’s car following a Coppa Italia tie against Inter, resulting in a broken windscreen.

A switch to Arsenal therefore would be an attractive proposition for the former Monaco man.
