Sporting Lisbon have scored a coup by snaring talented Dutch striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel from Utrecht.

The 22-year-old had impressed last season with the Eredivisie outfit, putting in fine performances domestically and also during the club’s involvement in the Europa League. Indeed, Van Wolfswinkel was linked with teams from across Europe, including Premier League giants Liverpool.

However, it is Sporting Lisbon who have won the race for the Holland international.

Having passed a medical in the Portuguese capital earlier today, Van Wolfswinkel has completed the final formalities of his move and signed a contract running until 2016.

Van Wolfswinkel has cost Sporting a fee of €5.4M, money the Portuguese side will consider well spent if the Dutchman can help to fire them to league glory next season; Sporting have recently slipped behind FC Porto, and city rivals Benfica, with even provincial upstarts Braga battling it out with the Lions for a top three spot.
