Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson has retired from football, bowing out unable to shake off a thigh injury picked up against Japan in the 2010 World Cup.
The 34-year-old was in his second spell with Dutch giants Feyenoord after notable stints with AC Milan, Newcastle United, VfB Stuttgart and Villarreal. Tomasson also found the back of the net 52 goals in 112 appearances for Denmark, ending up tied with the legendary Poul Nielson.
"It’s a sad day for a player like me", said Tomasson.
"I have been recovering for a year now without much progress and the doctor says he still needs at least three months to treat me with no guarantee of a full recovery."
Instead, the Dane will now put his efforts into coaching, taking up a role as assistant coach at Excelsior Rotterdam, Feyenoord’s feeder club.
