Liverpool are closing in on Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson after making a breakthrough in transfer talks and agreeing a fee with the North East side.

The Black Cats were holding out for £20M for 20-year-old Henderson, but Liverpool had offered £16M. There is also an expectation that French striker David N’Gog could form part of any deal as a makeweight.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish remains keen to complete the deal before the youngster heads off to join England’s Under-21 squad travelling to the European Championships in Denmark.

“A fee has been agreed with Liverpool for Jordan Henderson and he travels to Anfield with the club’s blessing”, read a statement released by the Black Cats.

Sunderland have been able to extract a premium price from Liverpool due to Henderson’s age and contract length. The Sunderland-born midfielder signed a five-year deal only last year, meaning with another four-years to run, the Black Cats were in a strong position.

Henderson has also been closely tracked by Manchester United, but Sir Alex Ferguson switched his attention to other targets after, it is thought, becoming convinced the player’s asking price did not represent value.

For Liverpool, the signing of a young English talent fits in with their new policy of snapping up domestic based youth with the potential to improve and increase in value.
