Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to have added Borussia Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa to his summer wanted list.

The Japanese international was simply sensational in his first campaign with Dortmund last season, helping the Ruhr giants to run away with the 2010/11 Bundesliga title. And at a fee of just €350,000, Kagawa was rightfully considered the signing of last summer.

His progress though has not gone unnoticed by Ferguson, with the Scot receiving regular scouting reports praising the young Japanese. Now, Japan-based daily Nikkan Sports has broken Manchester United’s latest interest in the 22-year-old, interest welcomed by Kagawa.

"If I get an official offer I’ll be interested in listening to it", said the midfielder.

For their part, Dortmund are desperate to protect their most prized assets, especially with a Champions League campaign and Bundesliga title defence looming, and that includes Kagawa.

However, a fly in the ointment for the Germans comes in the form of Kagawa’s contract, with the Japan star only locked in until 2013. The Ruhr club are concerned, as next summer the midfielder will have just a year remaining on his present deal.

And while the Ruhr side have planned talks over a new deal, United are pondering a bid.
