Serie A giants Roma look likely to concentrate their search for a new goalkeeper on Ajax shot-stopper Maarten Stekelenburg.
Reports from Italy suggest that the Giallorossi have decided to target the Dutchman as they bid to improve their side for next season.
And while Ajax would dearly love to keep Stekelenburg in Amsterdam, there is a realisation at the Dutch club that a substantial bid would be difficult to turn down, especially with the reliable and promising Kenneth Vermeer serving as understudy.
Roma are flush with cash after their takeover by American businessman Thomas DiBenedetto and recently appointed former Barcelona B coach Luis Enrique as their new boss.
Hopes are high at the Stadio Olimpico next season and the Giallorossi have targeted a return to the Champions League as soon as possible.
Stekelenburg would undoubtedly be tempted by a big-money move to Roma, particularly in the wake of Manchester United overlooking the shot-stopper to focus their attention on Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea as a replacement for the retired Edwin van der Sar.
