Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to go head to head with their North London rivals Arsenal in their pursuit of Blackburn Rovers defender Chris Samba.

The powerful centre back was identified by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger as a potential summer signing several months ago, with the Frenchman believing Samba could add real steel to a backline which has, on occasion, wilted under pressure.

Indeed, last season Arsenal conceded 43 goals in the Premier League, ten more than both Chelsea and Manchester City; sixth-placed Liverpool only shipped a single goal more than the Gunners too.

And 27-year-old Samba is increasingly being seen as the answer to that problem.

But it is believed that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is prepared to enter the race for the Congo international, believing that Samba can be tempted to White Hart Lane.

Samba is ready to quit Ewood Park having grown disillusioned at the club. The former Hertha Berlin stopper was disappointed with the sacking of Sam Allardyce last season.

Blackburn are thought to be looking for £10M for their defensive man-mountain.
