Chelsea’s pursuit of FC Porto boss Andre Villas-Boas has moved forward after the Portuguese club confirmed the coach has handed in his resignation.

Villas-Boas has a release clause of €15M in his contract. The 33-year-old faxed Porto his resignation and then indicated that he will, through Chelsea, meet the amount needed to dissolve his current deal.

The move will leave the Europa League-winning manager free to head to Stamford Bridge.

News broke yesterday which confirmed it was a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ Villas-Boas joined Chelsea, with the personal terms put in front of the Portuguese simply too lucrative to turn down.

Villas-Boas, who worked under Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge, is expected to follow in his mentor’s footsteps by instantly launching a raid on his former club. Striker Falcao is Villas-Boas’ top target as Chelsea prepare to meet his €30M buy-out clause.
