Inter could plump for ex-Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini as their new coach, but the 53-year-old may simply be keeping the bench warm for Josep Guardiola.

Gasperini has shot to the top of Massimo Moratti’s wanted list ahead of Guus Hiddink, Luciano Spalletti and Fabio Capello. In part this is because Gasperini is a free agent, but also taken into consideration is the possibility of tempting Barcelona boss Guardiola to the San Siro at the end of next season.

Guardiola looks to be in the last phase of his spell at the Camp Nou, having admitted that the special type of pressures which come with being Barcelona boss makes a long term spell unthinkable.

And Moratti would love for Inter to be the Spaniard’s next port of call, although the earliest that could happen would be next summer.

Guardiola has prior experience of Serie A, having turned out for both Brescia and Roma as a player. To manage Inter after succeeding with Barcelona could be attractive to the Catalan coach.
