French forward Sidney Govou believes he can leave current club Panathinaikos for free due to the financial problems gripping the Greek giants.

Govou has endured what has been, at times, a difficult spell in Athens since signing for the then-Super League champions last summer, with the former Lyon man often criticised for what was perceived to be a less than professional attitude and a propensity to enjoy the city’s nightclubs a little too much.

And it would be little surprise to see the Frenchman quit the Greens this summer, with Ligue 1 newcomers Evian having already sounding him out about a move.

"Even if I have a year on my contract, I can go for free because the club has big financial problems"
, explained Govou to L’Equipe.

"If there are good opportunities, a good small project, why not leave?"

The speedy forward also admitted contact with Evian, but insists he is taking time to think about their offer.

"From Evian yes, I have had contact with their management. They’ve presented their project, which may interest me. I am allowing a little time for reflection."
