Roma have moved into pole position for Marseille schemer Lucho Gonzalez after La Liga side Malaga cooled their interest in the 30-year-old.
New Giallorossi coach Luis Enrique is keen to recruit Gonzalez for next season and the Portuguese is available for the right price.
The former FC Porto midfielder is rated by Marseille coach Didier Deschamps, but will be allowed to leave the Stade Velodrome if an offer of €13M is sent to the Ligue 1 giants.
It is this which, at present, looks to be the sticking point, with Roma unwilling to pay quite as much as €13M for the Argentine.
Gonzalez cost Marseille €18M to buy from FC Porto in 2009, arriving in France amid much fanfare, and helped the club to the 2009/10 Ligue 1 title.
Under contract at the Stade Velodrome until 2013, Gonzalez has previously stated he has no desire to leave Marseille. However, should the club accept a bid from Roma, it would be a surprise to see him turn down the switch.
