Roma believe that the price Arsenal will pay for Argentine midfielder Ricky Alvarez is too high.

It has emerged that the Giallorossi were also tracking the 23-year-old and had even secured a pre-agreement with Alvarez’ club Velez Sarsfield, but sporting director Walter Sabatini was not willing to meet the asking price placed on the Argentine’s head.

"For Alvarez, we had a pre-agreement that was valid until a certain date", explained Sabatini, "but players must be purchased at a fair value and to take him for €15M, I would have considered it a mistake."

€15M is thought to be the amount Arsenal are paying to take Alvarez to the Emirates and the player is highly rated by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

The news of Roma’s interest comes hot off the heels of an admission by fellow Serie A side Palermo that they too wanted the Velez man, but were beaten to his signature by Arsenal.

Wenger will hope Alvarez can quickly adapt to English football and that shelling out €15M for his services is not a mistake. The arrival of the player has however yet to be confirmed by the London giants.
