Manchester United striker Federico Macheda believes that the Old Trafford club are always destined to stay one step ahead of their rivals Manchester City.

Macheda, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Italian side Sampdoria, is hoping for the chance to make an impression in the Premier League next season, and help United stay at the top of the English game.

"Manchester City? The rivalry with United is very strong", explained Macheda to Sky Sport, "but we are always one step ahead."

And the striker is bidding to remain at Old Trafford, certain that time in English football would be better than another loan spell back in his native Italy.

"I wanted to have a high level experience in Italy, but now I hope to stay in the Premier League. England is more suitable for a young man."
