Roma believe they have lost out in the race to sign Arsenal defender Gael Clichy to Manchester City.

The Frenchman has just one year remaining on his contract at the Emirates and had made noises that he would be open to a switch away from the London club.

This caused a number of sides, chief amongst them Roma and Liverpool, to start to explore the possibility of snapping up the left back. And the signs were encouraging for Roma especially, with Arsenal keen Clichy should not strengthen a Premier League rival.

However, Gazzetta dello Sport report that the Giallorossi believe they have lost the race, with Manchester City moving for Clichy and Roberto Mancini’s side in pole position to complete a deal quickly.

For Roma the news is a blow, while Liverpool had been hoping to tempt Clichy to Anfield.

The lure of Champions League football and the opportunity to be part of a side sure to challenge for next season’s Premier League title appears to have been too much for the defender to refuse though.
