Sunderland have completed a double raid on English champions Manchester United, swooping for defenders John O’Shea and Wes Brown.

Both O’Shea and Brown have agreed four-year contracts at the Stadium of Light.

The pair had faced the prospect of limited first team football under Sir Alex Ferguson as Fabio da Silva and Rafael da Silva blocked off a route to a full back slot and Chris Smalling was joined by Phil Jones earlier this summer in providing central defensive backup for Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

On O’Shea, Sunderland boss Steve Bruce, himself a former United defender, commented: "O’Shea’s wealth of experience and versatility will be great attributed for us."

And the Sunderland manager also praised the arrival of Brown at the Black Cats.

"He has been a fantastic professional for Manchester United through the years and not only will he strengthen our defensive options, he will also bring with him a winning mentality and level of maturity which can only be positive for the players around him."
