Benfica could launch a swoop for Lille defender Emerson as they bid to replace the departed Fabio Coentrao.

Since selling Coentrao to Real Madrid for €30M, the Portuguese side have been on the lookout for a replacement left back – and in Emerson believe they may have found a player to fit the bill.

The 25-year-old helped Lille to the Ligue 1 title last season and has plied his trade for the French side since 2006, but has just one year remaining on his current deal.

According to Portuguese radio station Antena 1, Benfica’s directors have already held talks with representatives of the player and agreed terms over a five-year contract in Lisbon.

Benfica are now preparing to send a bid of €2M to Lille and are hopeful this will be enough to take Emerson to Portugal.
