Uruguay dumped Argentina out of the 2011 Copa America last night, seeing off the hosts on penalties.

Diego Perez struck first for Uruguay after five minutes, before Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain levelled for the hosts in the 17th minute. No further goals were forthcoming though and the game ended 1-1 after extra time could not separate the two teams.

And to penalties the quarter-final went, with Carlos Tevez missing the crucial spot-kick, handing Uruguay a 5-4 victory and booking their passage to the semi-finals.

There Uruguay will meet Peru, who themselves caused a small shock by seeing off an impressive Colombia side.

That game also reached extra-time after the two sides could not be split, but then Carlos Lobaton and Juan Vargas struck for Peru, putting Colombia out 2-0.

Peru had only qualified as a third-placed team in their group, while Colombia powered to top theirs, but on the night these previous differing fortunes were quickly forgotten.
