Arsenal and Roma could go head to head for FC Copenhagen defender Mathias Jorgensen.

The Danish defender has emerged as a potential target for the duo, who have noted with interest that his contract at Parken expires in 2012, putting any buying party in a strong position.

Jorgensen has progressed quickly at FC Copenhagen and, in a sign of how highly the Danish giants rate the centre back, was named captain by the club’s boss Roland Nilsson just last week after William Kvist’s departure.

Just 21 years old, Jorgensen joined FC Copenhagen in 2007 from domestic minnows B.93. Long identified as a potential star, the defender has clocked up starts for Denmark’s national teams at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-21 levels, before receiving his first senior cap in 2008.

The Dane has been in Arsenal’s sights before and spent a short period on trial with the Gunners in 2006, but no deal materialised.

Jorgensen is rated at around the €3.5M bracket, although FC Copenhagen remain determined to hold onto their promising defender.
