Manchester City are making serious progress in their bid to sign Argentine hitman Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid, despite the collapse of Carlos Tevez’ proposed switch to Corinthians.
Aguero has been identified as the replacement for Tevez, but even though the former Manchester United striker is not now heading back to South America, City have chosen to push ahead with the deal for his countryman.
Tevez could yet join a South American club in the January transfer window, meaning City will still receive a substantial sum for his services, albeit delayed by six months.
23-year-old Aguero declared his intention to move on from the Vicente Calderon at the start of the summer, but the forward’s hope of remaining in Spain was quickly dashed as Real Madrid turned their attention to Santos’ man Neymar and Barcelona concentrated on Chile international Alexis Sanchez.
And so Aguero had to change his list of priorities, with a move to England and the Premier League welcomed.
City are expected to meet Aguero’s buy-out clause, £39M, and personal terms should not prove to be a problem, with the Eastlands side believing that the Argentine is the perfect long term replacement for his countryman Tevez.
Roberto Mancini’s side had wanted to use any fee received for Tevez to help finance the Aguero deal, but will now bridge the gap themselves until the 27-year-old can be sold.
