Sources in Italy suggest that AC Milan are preparing to mount an offensive to sign German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich.

The Rossoneri are desperate to make a big name signing for their midfield this summer and speculation has been intense over just who the Italian champions will buy.

Napoli schemer Marek Hamsik was long mooted as Milan’s objective, but the Slovak looks difficult to take from the southern Italian club, and Schweinsteiger is thought to have remained the side’s primary target nevertheless.

The Germany star is under contract at the Allianz Arena until 2016, but is also thought to fancy the challenge of playing abroad, with Serie A a tempting proposition.

Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri is hopeful of having the 26-year-old at his disposal, but also realistic enough to realise that Bayern will not allow Schweinsteiger to depart without a fight.

Should the midfielder end up at the San Siro, it will be a big coup for Milan and would further announce their return to the first rank of European clubs, with the Rosssoneri set on recapturing the Champions League next season.
