Real Madrid have been handed a boost of transfer flexibility by Marcelo.

The Brazilian left back has secured Spanish citizenship, meaning he will no longer take up one of Los Blancos’ non-EU player berths.

La Liga allow clubs to have up to three non-EU players in their squad and Marcelo had taken up one of these spots for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Now, with the 23-year-old having obtained Spanish citizenship, Real Madrid have just one non-EU national within their squad – Angel di Maria.

Marcelo’s move thus gives Mourinho and the Real Madrid management greater flexibility when planning their transfer targets.

Marcelo joined Real Madrid in 2007 from Fluminense.
