Sporting Lisbon have denied talk that they have stitched up a deal with Arsenal for wantaway striker Nicklas Bendtner.

The Danish international is ready to leave the Gunners for regular first team football, but only at a prestigious club.

And it had been reported that Sporting were that club, with the Portuguese side said by the British media to be close to sealing a deal with Bendtner.

But Sporting boss Carlos Freitas had denied that and joked that moves to sign Bendtner are as advanced as those to sign Chelsea frontman Didier Drogba.

"Bendtner is just a fictional idea. I have no justification for the news", said Freitas.

"He is a player that is as close to strengthening Sporting as [Gonzalo] Higuain, Drogba or Bojan Krkic."

Bendtner is still expected to leave the Emirates, but Portuguese giants Sporting look an unlikely destination following Freitas’ words.
