Anderlecht hope to finally work out a deal with Liverpool for Serbian striker Milan Jovanovic this week.
The Belgian giants have been talking to the former Standard Liege man for the last month, but have yet to conclude an agreement which would satisfy the 30-year-old.
Jovanovic has been declared surplus to requirements by Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish and at the start of the summer was informed he is free to look for a new club.
But while Liverpool will wave any transfer fee to offload Jovanovic from the wage bill, finding a club able to take on the forward’s £60,000 per week contract is proving difficult.
Anderlecht have remained the keenest and Jovanovic would head back to Belgium – he enjoyed vast success in the country with Standard Liege before joining Liverpool on a free transfer last summer.
However, Anderlecht cannot come to a wage agreement with Jovanovic and need Liverpool to help smooth the deal.
Jovanovic is due in Brussels this week for further talks with Anderlecht, while on Tuesday the Belgian club’s president Herman Van Holsbeeck is due on Merseyside for discussions with Liverpool.
The hope is that the Reds will agree to hand Jovanovic a pay-off which will cover the difference between what he earns at Anfield and the amount Anderlecht can afford to pay the hitman.
"On 2nd August I will know whether or not I will move to Anderlecht", Jovanovic told Het Laatste Nieuws.
Should a deal prove beyond reach, then Jovanovic has a fallback option, with Al Shabab boss Michel Preud’Homme ready to take the Serbian to the Middle East.
