Liverpool are close to solving their left back dilemma by snapping up Jose Enrique from Newcastle United.

Kenny Dalglish and the Reds Director of Football Damien Comolli have been scouring the transfer market all summer for a new left back, with Liverpool coming close to signing Aly Cissokho from Lyon and also checking out FC Porto’s Uruguayan star Alvaro Pereira.

But Spaniard Enrique has always been the club’s first choice and Dalglish will be delighted to sign the 25-year-old.

Newcastle had been demanding as much as £10M for Enrique, despite the former Villarreal defender having just a year left on his contract.

This stance now looks to have been softened and the Reds are thought to have agreed to pay around £6M for Enrique.

The agreement of personal terms should not prove a problem with the Spaniard excited at the prospect of heading to Anfield.

For Dalglish, Enrique should be the final piece of his summer jigsaw, although the performances of his central defenders in pre-season friendlies, where Liverpool have shipped far too many goals, could yet result in another swoop.
