French defender Jean-Alain Boumsong is in talks with Bundesliga duo Stuttgart and Wolfsburg over a switch to Germany.
The 31-year-old currently turns out for Greek Super League side Panathinaikos, but the Greens need to trim their wage bill and finances are stretched; already Sidney Govou and Djibril Cisse have left the Athens club.
Boumsong then could be next and both Stuttgart and Wolfsburg are equally keen on the Frenchman.
The former Newcastle United defender is under contract with Panathinaikos until 2013, but an agreement could be reached with the Greeks.
There could yet be interest from elsewhere in the centre back however, with a return back to his native France still a possibility.
