Romelu Lukaku’s Belgium team-mate Daniel van Buyten has revealed that the striker was closely tracked by his club Bayern Munich before opting to head to Chelsea.

The English Premier League giants agreed a fee for Lukaku at the weekend and the player himself is raring to land at Stamford Bridge and begin the next phase of his promising career.

But the powerful striker could just as easily have been linking up with Van Buyten at the Allianz Arena following the defender’s admission that the German giants wanted the teenager.

"We have the same agent", said Van Buyten, "so we often discussed what would be good for Romelu.

"Sometimes it is advisable to wait a bit before moving abroad, but in Romelu’s case I think he’s ready.

"He is intelligent and he knows he must work hard if he is to succeed at Chelsea."

And the tough-tackling defender confirmed that Bayern Munich also wanted the striker.

"Bayern also followed him, but I think Chelsea is a good choice."
