Liverpool have announced they have agreed a fee with Newcastle United for Jose Enrique.
The Spanish left back has been in Kenny Dalglish’s sights for most of the summer, but the Reds’ moves were consistently scuppered by Newcastle’s prohibitive pricing.
Indeed, despite Enrique having just a year remaining on his deal at St. James’ Park, Liverpool were initially quoted £15M for the 25-year-old.
But Newcastle have reassessed in recent weeks and have accepted a bid thought to be a little over £6M.
“Liverpool FC confirmed today that they had agreed a fee with Newcastle United for the transfer of Jose Enrique”, read a statement released by the Merseyside giants.
“The club have now been given permission to discuss personal terms with the player, who will travel to Liverpool to undergo a medical.”
Enrqiue’s arrival will close the door on Liverpool’s interest in FC Porto full back Alvaro Pereira, although a centre back still looks likely to arrive at Anfield before the transfer window shuts.
