Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted that he wants midfielder Samir Nasri to stay at the club. The Frenchman still looks likely to be overruled at board level if the schemer refuses to sign a new contract however.
Nasri has just one year remaining on his current deal and watched Cesc Fabregas head to Barcelona yesterday.
And Nasri should be following the Spaniard out of the door having failed to find agreement with the Gunners over extending his contract and also having fielded an offer from Manchester City which would make him the highest paid player in French football history.
Despite this though Wenger is still hoping that the former Marseille man will stay at the Emirates.
"I want Samir to stay, hopefully we can sort the situation out", said Wenger.
"His situation is not linked with Cesc’s departure.
"As much as we were in a strong position on the contract side with Cesc, the situation with Samir is a bit different. Hopefully we can sort that out and keep him."
Wenger had made noises about keeping Nasri even if the midfielder refused to sign a new deal, but the Arsenal board are still likely to veto that as they do not want to lose a £20M player for free next summer.
