Barcelona won a thrilling Spanish Supercup last night, triumphing 3-2 over Real Madrid at the Camp Nou.
Combined with the 2-2 draw played out at the Bernabeu over the weekend, the result was good enough to hand Josep Guardiola’s side their first silverware of the season, with a 5-4 aggregate victory.
And while the 2011/12 campaign may be a new one, for Barcelona’s Lionel Messi it is simply the continuation of brilliance that began some years ago.
Andres Iniesta handed Barcelona the lead after 15 minutes, but Real Madrid struck back through Cristiano Ronaldo; then Messi intervened.
The brilliant Argentine scored just before half time and then, following Real Madrid’s reply through Karim Benzema, once again with just two minutes left on the clock.
The night provided new Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas with his first taste of life at the Camp Nou as the former Arsenal man joined the action in the 82nd minute.
One dark cloud on the night was a brawl at the end of the evening, with Real Madrid’s Marcelo sent off at the death for a poor challenge. This prompted a brawl between players and staff from both sides, with Jose Mourinho appearing to poke Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova in the eye.
