Lazio have appeared to leave the door open for the possible sale of Mauro Zarate just hours after the player’s brother confirmed he knew nothing of talk of a transfer to Arsenal.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been linked with a bid for Zarate and the Argentine was left out of the Serie A side’s team to play Rabotnicki in the Europa League on Thursday.

But Zarate’s brother, Sergio Zarate, played down speculation that a switch to the Emirates was near enough a done deal, insisting he was not aware of any package on the table or talks between the clubs.

It now appears though that Lazio could well be preparing the ground to do a deal at the right price.

"Zarate is an important and fundamental player for us", confirmed Lazio technical director Igli Tare.

"But if something happens between now and the end of the transfer window then we’ll evaluate things."
