Harry Kewell has opted to return to his native Australia by signing a three-year contract with A-League side Melbourne Victory.

The forward, whose finest moment in the game came as part of Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League winning campaign, spurned an offer from Melbourne Victory’s rivals Sydney FC, delighting Victory’s fans.

Under the terms of his agreement with Victory, the former Galatasaray player will take home a percentage of any increase in attendances, memberships and merchandising sales while he is at the club.

Victory have predicted that Kewell’s presence could add an extra 20,000 fans to their crowd for the player’s debut.

"It has always been my ambition to play in my home country and I am very pleased to have the opportunity to play for Victory", said Kewell.

Victory Chairman Anthony Di Pietro was understandably delighted at the deal, gushing: "This will take football to the next level."
