Liverpool are in talks to snap up highly rated young Uruguayan defender Sebastian Coates and are hopeful the player should land at Anfield well ahead of the close of the transfer window.
Coates excelled at this summer’s Copa America, which Uruguay won, and has popped up on Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish’s radar.
6ft 6in Coates is one of the success stories of Uruguay’s lauded youth system, one which has helped a country of just 3.5M people field one of the finest international sides in world football.
The Reds manager wants to add a central defender to his squad and has been linked with Birmingham City’s Scott Dann and Bolton Wanderers’ Gary Cahill.
Further space was made at Anfield for the arrival of a new defender with the departure of Greece international Sotirios Kyrgiakos to Wolfsburg yesterday.
And it seems that the 20-year-old Coates could be the Greek’s replacement on Merseyside.
Liverpool would need to pay a fee of around £12M to take the player from Uruguayan side Nacional.
Coates has also been linked with Manchester City this summer.
