Arsenal are being linked with a cut-price alternative to Eden Hazard – Basel star Xherdan Shaqiri.

Lille are digging in to resist Arsene Wenger’s attempts to sign Hazard before the transfer window closes and their position has already been made clear by president Michel Seydoux.

The Ligue 1 champions’ supremo took little time after the transfer of Samir Nasri to Manchester City to declare that if the Frenchman was worth €28M, then Hazard is worth double.

Any operation to sign Hazard therefore would be complex and hugely expensive.

Arsenal are keeping their options open and 19-year-old Shaqiri has emerged as a potential alternative to the Lille schemer.

Shaqiri has impressed Wenger with his displays for Swiss champions Basel as well as his forays onto the international scene with Switzerland.

The forward would be an affordable alternative to Hazard, but Basel will put up a fight to keep their promising star.
