Sochaux striker Marvin Martin has backed his partner Modibo Maiga, despite the 24-year-old even going so far as to refuse to play and train with the Ligue 1 side to force through a move to Newcastle United.

And while Maiga has now returned to the Sochaux team, the Mali international still hopes his club’s president will agree to listen to offers from Newcastle for his signature.

Maiga can boast the backing of Martin, and the 23-year-old, who forms a deadly partnership with the Malian, has explained that all is well at the club.

"There was not a bad atmosphere in the dressing room", said Martin.

"The evidence was that we won at Nancy."

Martin revealed that he understands Maiga’s position, but could not strike as his partner did.

"I was the first to say that I wanted to leave and sometimes to do that you need to do things like that [strike].

"I could not do that though, because I like to train and play too."
