Sebastian Coates has rejected the chance to hold talks with Atletico Madrid in favour of a move to Liverpool.

The towering Uruguayan centre back is keen on joining the Reds after the English side agreed a fee of £7M with Nacional for his services.

And despite Coates travelling to Merseyside to undergo a medical and put the finishing touches to his move, La Liga outfit Atletico tried to hijack the deal at the last minute.

Upon learning that long-time target Coates was heading to Anfield, Atletico hurriedly offered £1M more than Liverpool to Nacional in an attempt to halt the deal and win the chance to speak with the defender.

But after Nacional contacted Coates to gauge his interest in the Spanish club, the bid of £8M was rejected.

Coates starred at the recent Copa America for winners Uruguay and is tipped as one of the most promising young centre backs in world football.

The 20-year-old, who has repeatedly been compared to Uruguayan great Diego Lugano (who could himself be on the move this summer), set his heart on moving to Anfield after speaking with international team-mate Luis Suarez.

"Luganito" is expected to sign a long-term contract with Liverpool.
