Sources in France have confirmed that Manchester City followed Atletico Madrid and Terek Grozny in enquiring about Marseille midfielder Mathieu Valbuena.
The Citizens contacted Marseille’s sporting director Jose Anigo last week according to Journal du Dimanche, to sound out the French side over whether Valbuena would be able to arrive at Eastlands before the transfer window shut, for the right price.
But City were met with the same answer that had been given to Russian Premier League side Terek Grozny and La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid, a firm, polite ‘no’.
While Valbuena is thought to have been available for transfer earlier this summer, Marseille were not willing to part with the midfielder this close to the end of the transfer window.
Now the focus is very much on the player remaining at the Stade Velodrome.
Valbuena has also been linked with Arsenal this month, as have his team-mates Andre Ayew and Lucho Gonzalez.
