Chelsea will return with a new bid for Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles before the end of the transfer window.

Andre Villas-Boas had an offer worth £8M plus Yossi Benayoun rejected by the Reds yesterday, but the Portuguese’s desire to bring his countryman to Stamford Bridge remains undimmed.

Chelsea believe that Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish will allow Meireles to leave Merseyside for the right price and will test this theory with a better offer, which could yet include a striker the Reds rate highly – Daniel Sturridge.

Meireles is concerned about a lack of games this season, with Liverpool top-heavy in midfielders and Steven Gerrard still to return from injury.

And with the 2012 European Championships at the end of the campaign, Meireles wants to be a regular part of Liverpool’s starting eleven.

A move to link up with former FC Porto boss Villas-Boas is therefore tempting and the young Chelsea manager is known to rate the Portugal international extremely highly.
