Marseille could be set to snap up Ghana star Asamoah Gyan from Sunderland on loan.

Gyan is reported by L’Equipe to have asked to leave the Black Cats this afternoon, alerting Didier Deschamps’ side to his potential availability.

The 25-year-old striker joined Sunderland from French club Rennes last year, instantly impressing in the English Premier League.

Gyan performed well with Rennes between 2008 and 2010, but particularly excelled in the 2010 World Cup, leading Sunderland boss Steve Bruce to take him to the Stadium of Light for a fee of £13M.

Bruce would appear unlikely to agree to the loan exit of Gyan without a replacement lined up and the Sunderland boss’ preferred option of Peter Crouch appears to be on his way to Stoke City.
