Raul Meireles has submitted a written transfer request to Liverpool as the clock ticks down to the closure of the summer transfer window.
The former FC Porto midfielder has been the subject of interest from Chelsea in the last few days and Liverpool rejected a cash plus Yossi Benayoun offer for Meireles yesterday.
Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has remained keen to take the 28-year-old to Stamford Bridge however and was tipped to return with a fresh bid.
Meireles was signed by former Reds boss Roy Hodgson last summer and was widely viewed as the former Fulham manager’s most successful piece of business.
The all-action midfielder has not appeared unhappy at Anfield, but has been concerned about the amount of playing time he will receive this season.
And the chance to move to Chelsea appears to have motivated Meireles’ transfer request.
