Roma are closing on the signature of Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Gago.

The Argentine has no place at the Bernabeu this season and saw a proposed move to Boca Juniors fall through earlier this summer.

But now Gago has popped onto Roma coach Luis Enrique’s wanted list and the Giallorossi have reached an agreement with Jose Mourinho’s side.

Gago is now expected to formalise his transfer in the Italian capital and put pen to paper on a contract with the Serie A club.

The 25-year-old has fallen out of favour at Real Madrid and given the Spanish side’s glut of midfield talents looks unlikely to force his way back into the picture.

Gago will now hope to relaunch his career with Roma.
