Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his disappointment at the club’s shock exit from the League Cup at the hands of Crystal Palace.

The English champions were fancied to book their spot in the semi-final and would have met Championship side Cardiff City, meaning another trip to Wembley would have been on the cards.

But United succumbed to a surprise 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace, with Glenn Murray heading the Eagles through in extra-time.

Ferguson, despite resting players, had still selected a side with eight full internationals and expected to have the strength to see off Crystal Palace.

And for the fact they did not do so Ferguson was sorry and disappointed.

"I don’t know where to start to be honest", said the Scot.

"My apologies are to the fans because that was not a Manchester United performance.

"I don’t want to take anything away from Crystal Palace. I am just very disappointed."

There was no bitterness from Ferguson, with the United supremo wishing the Eagles every success.

"I wish them every success and hope they get to the final because it was a fantastic, mammoth effort from them tonight."
