Chelsea are moving themselves into position to pounce for Chilean forward Eduardo Vargas.
The 22-year-old is picking up suitors at an astonishing rate, with Serie A giants Inter openly admitting an interest in the player.
Nerazzurri technical director Marco Branca has confirmed that the Italians are big fans of Vargas, though no concrete offer has, as yet, been sent to Universidad de Chile.
Now sources in Chile have reported that a Chelsea representative is believed to have been in the country to meet with Vargas’ club side, with a view to doing a deal.
The Blues are soon to have at least one space amongst their roster of strikers, with Frenchman Nicolas Anelka having been granted his wish to leave the club.
Veteran Ivorian Didier Drogba could also follow Anelka’s lead after his agent admitted that a one-year contract offer from Chelsea had been turned down and that the 33-year-old would move to wherever he is offered the most money.
The acquisition of Vargas would be perfectly in keeping with manager Andre Villas-Boas’ aim to lower the average age of the Blues squad and inject youthful vigour into the side.
Vargas is highly rated and has, in some quarters, been dubbed the "new Alexis Sanchez".
The 22-year-old put in a series of stellar displays for Universidad de Chile in the 2011 Copa Sudamericana and was quickly noted by Europe’s biggest clubs.
