Sunderland have appointed Martin O’Neill as Steve Bruce’s successor at the Stadium of Light.

O’Neill has inked a three-year contract with the Black Cats and returns to football after over a year out of the game.

"It’s very nice to be back in football and to be the manager of Sunderland", said the former Celtic manager.

"It’s a big moment for me", he added.

O’Neill, who was last in charge of Aston Villa, also praised the facilities he has found at the Stadium of Light.

"I’d heard about what a good club it was but coming here, seeing the stadium and the training ground, I’ve been bowled over.

"It’s absolutely fantastic. I hope I can help Sunderland to a very successful period.

"That’s what I’ve come for and that’s my driving ambition."
