AC Milan are aiming to unveil Javier Mascherano alongside countryman Carlos Tevez in January.
The Italian champions have made a loan offer for Manchester City outcast Tevez and are hopeful of securing his signature when the winter window opens.
However, Milan are planning ahead in other areas too and, with Dutch midfield enforcer Mark van Bommel set to exit the San Siro sooner rather than later, eyes have been cast in the direction of Mascherano.
The former Liverpool man has struggled to cement a spot in Barcelona’s first team since moving to the Camp Nou in 2010.
Mascherano has often been played out of position by Blaugrana coach Josep Guardiola and may welcome the opportunity to become a lynchpin in Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri’s starting eleven.
And the Italians hope the presence of countryman Tevez at the Rossoneri could be another factor which sways Mascherano into swapping La Liga for Serie A.
The 27-year-old is under contract with Barcelona until 2014.
