Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney believes a repeat of the weekend showing at Aston Villa is exactly what is needed against Swiss champions Basel in the Champions League tonight.

United need to avoid defeat at St. Jakob Park, while a win for Basel would be enough to see them through.

And Rooney, who played in the hard-fought 1-0 win at Villa Park on Saturday, believes that the English champions must control the game just as they did against Alex McLeish’s men.

"We need to make sure we try and control the game as we did at Aston Villa", said Rooney.

"It’ll be a fantastic atmosphere, but we’ve had a good record away from home in the last few years and that helps us. Hopefully, it applies itself tomorrow."

The striker also rejected talk that United had adopted the wrong tactics in their first game against the Swiss, a match which was drawn 3-3 but could easily have been lost by the English side.

"There was nothing wrong with our tactics, it was the complacency as we got wasteful with our chances.

"We showed a lack of discipline in the second half and it cost us an extra two points. But we did our job against Otelul Galati, did well at Benfica and were unlucky at home to Benfica when we should have won."
