Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping that Wayne Rooney can fire the club to glory in the second half of the season.

Rooney scored twice in the weekend’s 4-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford and almost instantly erased the disappointment of exiting the Champions League in midweek.

And for Ferguson, who knows the Englishman tends to go on min-goalscoring runs where a glut of strikes arrive at once, Rooney’s performance was a welcome one.

"We hope he goes on a spurt now", Ferguson told MUTV.

"With Wayne in particular, he tends to score in spurts – for instance, early this season he scored 11 in the early part of the campaign.

"Now we’re heading towards an important part of the season and if we get that sort of ratio from Wayne again that will put us in good fettle."

Next up for Manchester United is a trip to newly promoted Queens Park Rangers – a game Ferguson will back Rooney to continue his goalscoring run in.
