Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has played down talk that he is certain to enter the winter transfer market, insisting it is not a foregone conclusion.
With midfielders Tom Cleverley, Anderson and Darren Fletcher all sidelined, and centre back Nemanja Vidic out for the remainder of the season, Ferguson has been linked with a whole host of players.
It has been widely assumed that the Scot will be active in the market – but the Red Devils boss is playing his cards close to his chest.
Asked whether he was preparing to add to his squad in the winter window, Ferguson played down the constant stream of speculation.
“Not necessarily”, said the United boss.
“I don’t know why people keep going on about it”, he added.
United though will move if a long-standing target is available however, with Ferguson commenting that his non-buying policy did not apply if “someone appears we have always been interested in.”
