Barcelona have won the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup after a crushing 4-0 victory over South American champions Santos.
The Catalans, who had targeted the trophy for injured colleague David Villa – the striker broke his leg in Barcelona’s 4-0 semi-final win over Al Saad last week – were ruthless in their display.
Barcelona took the lead through Lionel Messi after 17 minutes, before Xavi added a second just seven minutes later.
Cesc Fabregas struck on the stroke of half time to ensure Barcelona went in 3-0 up at the break and any realistic challenge from Neymar and co. had been ended.
Despite the Brazilians’ efforts, no way through the Blaugrana backline could be found and eight minutes from time Messi completed the rout.
A statement has clearly been sent by Josep Guardiola’s men, who have now picked up two Club World Cup titles in three years.
